We’ve put together a list of the most common scams involving online wallets. We recommend reading it and staying alert.

Phishing through fake websites

Scammers create clone sites of wallets (for example, a fake MetaMask or Trust Wallet). You follow a fake link and enter your seed phrase or password yourself.

How to avoid it: never follow links from emails or ads. Type the website address manually.

Fake apps in the App Store/Google Play

Scammers publish a clone of a real wallet with a similar icon and name. Once installed, the app steals your data and transfers your funds.

How to avoid it: check the app developer and the number of downloads. Download only from official links.

Giveaway and “airdrop” scams

You are invited to take part in a crypto giveaway, but asked to send a small amount “for verification” or enter your private keys.

How to avoid it: a giveaway that asks you to send something first is a scam.

Theft through malware

You click a phishing link and a trojan or keylogger is installed on your device. The scammer gets access to your wallet or swaps the recipient address when you copy it.

How to avoid it: use antivirus software, keep your system updated and don’t download files from untrusted sources.

SIM swapping

An attacker moves your phone number to their own SIM card and then restores access to your wallet by text message.

How to avoid it: turn off recovery by text message. Switch two-factor authentication to apps such as Google Authenticator.

Social engineering

A scammer pretends to be a support agent or an old acquaintance and tries to get your login details or private keys out of you.

How to avoid it: never tell anyone your seed phrase or private keys, even if it’s “support”.
